Unable to install automatic updates

Hiii.

I have an Acer E-572G, and it's just over a year old. Usually it updates automatically every once in a while when i turn it on, but for the past two times it has taken ages to update, before a message comes up saying it's 'Unable to install updates. Canceling changes.' This whole process takes around half an hour, and i have no idea why it suddenly can't update?

Also; I have had issues ever since I upgraded to Windows 8.1 - when i try to turn off my computer the screen goes black and it doesn't respond, but it's still running, and i have to hold down the power button to shut it down every single time.
The same goes if I try to close the lid (so like logging out or putting it in resting mode) it just goes black and unresponsive but keeps running till i physically turn it off.
I've heard plently of times it's not good for the computer to shut it off like that, so I don't know if that could be connected to the fact that it now suddenly wont update?

(And, btw, I did contact both Acer and Windows after this happened, which is about a year ago. Windows told me Acer needed to upgrade their servers to accomedate the new upgrade, and Acer told me Windows needed to come with a new update that worked for their servers - aka neither offered any help beyond that, and nothing has happened to fix the issue.)

Any ideas as to how i can fix this? :/

    Elen,

I think the problem you are experiencing with your Windows updates might be what we have in this article. Look that article over and if that's what it is doing, just let it do its thing. I think also that you might need to run a refresh on your system if it is having some problems, to see if it will fix it. If you can't get in to Windows to run the refresh, try the steps in this article.
