Before starting, measure the trade-offs: will existing programs work in a 64-bit OS? Do you really need the 64-bit OS?

    To Install:

You will have to do a boot install from the Windows DVD. Make sure that your DVD device is set to boot first in the sequence. If you have to change the boot order you will have to change the order in the BIOS.

After determining that your DVD device is the first in boot order. Place the 64bit version of Windows in the DVD drive [this is assuming you are upgrading to Win8] wait for the error message then close it, re-boot your computer and then you will be able to install the 64-bit version. Win 7 has both the 64-bit and 32-bit option on one disk. You can only load the 64-bit version in either version from a boot install because otherwise your system will be detected as a 32-bit configuration.

Remember: Save you files prior to installation. You will have to re-load all compatible programs [note: some porgrams in the advisor will state you can get a paid update. From my experience that doen't mean that those programs will not work.

Remember: This advise comes from a non-qualified user who considered the same upgrade. I, too, have the same Aspire T180 model. I could have upgraded to the Win8 64-bit version as we both know that the processor is 64-bit capable. I opted for 32-bit only because of two particular programs I like that I know will work in that environment.

PS. Please do reply on how it went if you do decided to go 64-bit.
