Acer E1-572G with R5 M240 1GB - graphics card issue

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with the graphics card and wish to determine whether this is a software or a hardware issue.

System: Win7 64x, Intel i3 4010U + ATI M240 1GB graphics card.

Installed latest Intel drivers (yes, installed them first), then latest ATI from the AMD website (amd-catalyst-omega-14.12-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit), as the latest AMD drivers on the Acer website would not even start CCC - gave an error "Catalyst control center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using".

The system is running fine when on integrated graphics, but when the dedicated one is powered up the display driver starts crashing and graphics corrupt.

See screenshots while testing in Passmark Performance test.

Passmark is indeed running on the AMD card, as the test results are labeled as "AMD R200 card", not Intel HD.

I have tried installing older driver versions, Acer ones, AMD website ones, modded ones, issue always persists.

Cleaned up drivers with DDU before switching as well.

Btw, this is a brand new machine, purchased this week, so the described problems are present since the beginning.

Just to provide some additional info, tested also in Trackmania - screen flikcers, random pixels, white squares and similar shapes are appearing all over the screen, runs for a while and then the display driver stops responding.

3dMark 11 crashes within a sec of starting the 1st test and display driver stops responding.

Running Windows experience index assessment results in the blue screen.

None of the above occur when Intel HD is in charge after I disable the Max Performance in CCC, all woks fine but with lower FPS naturally.

Tried Win 8.1 as well, same issues.

Am I missing something, or can we rule this as a hardware issue?

    last thing to try:

re-install the OS and drivers from Acer erecovery and check if the issue still persist, just press ALT+F10 at boot.

if so, probably you have a faulty AMD VGA.

contact your seller or Acer support service

    Thank you for your reply!
I don't have erecovery, as the notebook originally came without an OS.
I tried once again with Win 8.1 64x, clean install, installed only chipset, Intel drivers and AMD drivers from the Acer website, and issue still persists. Card is detected by the system (although a couple of programs such as Passmark Performance Test and the Trackmania game show the GPU memory as 0MB??), but driver still crahses and graphics are currupted when handled by the AMD card.

I guess I'm taking it back tomorrow, so they check the AMD GPU!

Update: online repair status for my device now states: Motherboard needs to be replaced, waiting for the part to arrive.

So it was a hardware issue then, although I'm not quite sure how to relate a motherboard issue to the problems I've been experiencing...
    Wait and see I guess!

Update: Motherboard replaced - issue fixed. Got the device back the other day, everything works fine now.
So, it was indeed a hardware issue.
    Thanks for listening Smiley Wink
