I can connect to internet immediately when booting my Acer E1-531 but after aprox an hour (sometimes less) the wifi adaptor loses contact with the router even though it is showing full signal strength and any other device is still connected. The only way I can get it to re-connect is to restart the laptop where connection is immediate.  Troubleshooting doesn't fix the problem, do I need a new wireless card?.  The laptop is about 2 years old at the most and just before this problem started last week I had a new router fitted as an upgrade to the previous one but every other device connects and stays on ok.

    Thanks.

    dash,

So I understand this correctly, you started having this problem when you upgraded your router?

Yes, the upgraded router was fitted on the same day.  I asked someone else local for technical help and he has advised to get the internet provider to reset the router to WPA2 to give a better setting .  I have replace the WIFI card today as the problem was getting worse but it still exists (at least I have a working spare now haha)

    dash,

If you haven't already, update the BIOS to version 1.26 that we have on our website, here's a direct link for the download.

The link takes me to Insyde H20fft flash firmware tool v5.51 but it doesn't won't work for me, it says “ERROR rom file not found”, then when I try to open it another way is won't unzip the files.

Is this a genuine Acer file?

I am 99% certain it is not a router problem as I have tried 2 more routers on to test it but the internet connection still goes off on average every hour and sometimes every 20 minutes when anything else connected stays on.  Yesterday I restarted the computer without opening an internet page and it kept connection with the router for 2 hours, then I opened a a web page and after an hour lost connection again.  Today I tried the 3rd router (Belkin) but again it is going off and saying “No networks available”

So far I have payed for a new wireless card (no change).

uninstalled my Kaspersky total security and ran Avast free to test it (no change) so reinstalled Kaspersky.

changed several router settings one at a time over 3 days and tested it with 2 further routers.

I have tried to send this reply 3 times now but each time I lose connection with the internet and have to start again so it is getting frustrating.

The laptop was 2 year old in December 2014 so I don't expect major problems like this to happen yet.

    dash,

I wouldn't lead you astray with the page, but here is a link to our drivers and manuals page you can go to and navigate to it, see if that works.

Thanks Justin, I was only checking as it seemed strange that it wouldn't run.

I am using windows 8.1 64bit and the last bios update for this system is showing as 2.21 which was updated  in Jan 2014, it also says it is for windows 8 only (not for upgrades), that one and 2 previous ones are all that come up when I put my laptop model number in.

    dash,

When it says not for upgrades, it means units that were upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8. You probably already knew that, but for those that didn't, there you go. Smiley Wink

Did it ship with Windows 7 or 8?

What version are you running in your BIOS currently?

If 7, is the 1.13 a newer version?

If 8, proceed with the 2.21 and see if that helps.

I think when I was searching for your unit, I was actually looking on the US site before, that's where the 1.26 version came from. Good catch, my mistake, thought I changed it to your country already. Smiley Embarassed

    Hi Justin.

Thanks for your information, yes I did a bit of reading and realised what the upgrade was.

I installed the upgrade and left it standing idle for an hour (when I am not browsing or opening web pages the internet doesn't seem to go off).  I then opened up my home page etc. and it actually stayed on for well over 2 hours which sort of had me thinking it was fixed but no it went off again, then after restarting it lasted for an hour before going off again.

I might of already mentioned that I also tried an ethernet cable but it still goes off.  Smiley Mad

    dash,

Ethernet connections really shouldn't drop connection... ever. That could be two things, bad Ethernet drivers or bad motherboard. If you've already updated the Ethernet drivers that kind of narrows it down.

To make sure it's not your router, use Ethernet on those other routers (if possible) and see if the connection drops. If it doesn't, it's something with your network that's causing issues.

Thanks for continuing to troubleshoot with me, hopefully we can get it figured out for you.

I haven't seen an update for the ethernet drivers so assume they are up to date.

Worryingly it seems as though I am getting painted into a motherboard corner!! which for a 2 year old machine is disapointing to say the least.  For a long time before the wifi problem I have also been plagued with the flash player crashing at least once a day despite numerous updates of that but I take it the 2 aren't linked in any way?.

I will put the other routers back on tomorrow and test with ethernet cable but feel that I have already done it with one of them, I will also dig out an old laptop of my wife's and see how that holds up online.

Thanks again, will let you know the outcome.

    dash,

I was giving worst case scenarios, hopefully it's not the motherboard though. You're correct though, other than the drivers that are posted on the site, you might have the most up to date drivers already via Windows updates (typically an optional update). Let's see how the testing goes though, hopefully it's not your motherboard.

    Good morning.

Tested stability with the other routers but it still cuts out with Ethernet connection as well as wireless.

On one day it stayed on for most of the day but the next morning on the same router (the old echolife one) it went off after an hour then stayed on for quite a few hours before going off. I switched back to the new router and it held for quite a few hours but again went off 3 times later in the day/evening. This morning I switched on and it lasted for an hour and a half before going off.

I have been getting a couple of the dreaded BSOD warnings also over the last 3 or 4 days.  The first one several times,

"DRIVER-POWER-STATE-FAILURE"  And the other one yesterday "DPC-WATCHDOG-VIOLATION" (Bug check 0x000000133).

IWould it change if I wiped and reset the laptop?  (I don't fancy doing this unless it will work as I'm not the best at knowing what I will lose and what needs saving etc.)

    Thanks.

    dash,

Try doing a refresh first to fix any operating system files before you do a full reload. Back up any data you wish to save before the reload, just so you have them somewhere.

Thanks Justin I will do that.

The refresh didn't work, still dropping internet on wireless and Ethernet. Final throw of the dice is to wipe everything and start again but will tackle that after backing everything up, to be honest I feel it will make no difference.  To use a well known quote  "I'm just going out and I may be some time".  If by any chance I lose everything, Thanks for your assistance haha!
