Acer Aspire V5-171-9620 upgrade to 16GB RAM not working

Laptop: V5-171-9620

BIOS:    2.21(current version)

CPU:     i3517U

Chipset: HM77

All Drivers:   Current versions as installed/supported by Acer for Windows 8x64.

Original RAM:   6GB    2GB + 4GB     DDR3-1600  CL11  1.5v

New RAM:        16GB  2x 8GB           DDR3L-1600  CL9   1.35v

I upgraded the RAM in this PC from 6GB (4GB + 2GB) to 16GB (2x 8GB).

The system is not stable on 16GB RAM, but it is stable when using just one (either) of the 8GB RAM modules.

When the laptop crashes, it is a hardware lock-up - the screen goes black, HDD activity stops, but the system stays on and has to be powered off by pulling the battery power.

The laptop, while using 16GB RAM:

- usually locks-up when the laptop battery power (in HWMonitor) is dropping and nears 15v.

- doesn't as easily lock-up when running on adapter power.

In both cases, the memory, CPU and HM77 all run very hot - like being overclocked. However, CPUID shows the laptop running the memory at 800MHz, CL9, using 1.35V, system bus is stable at 100MHz. Windows Task Manger doesn't show any excessive CPU/Memory/HDD use, and Intel Turbo Boost doesn't seem to be over-doing it any usual than before the memory upgrade.

I cannot make the laptop crash when just using one (either) of the 8GB RAM modules separately (I tried several tests and high-load software), battery voltage going below 15V caused no problems.

There currently isn't anything in the BIOS that can be changed/tweaked for system memory.

Any suggestions to use the 16GB RAM on this system without problems?

Is this RAM bad? It was a new-kit/matched pair, and I ran memtest86 for a day with zero errors detected.

I didn't have any issues with the original 6GB running in dual channel, at 800MHz, CL11 and 1.5V.

From what I can tell, the laptop should support 16GB RAM with CL9 and 1.35V.
