Problem with Acer H236HL

I almost always have my laptop closed and plugged into my Acer monitor. Today I took my laptop to the library and left my monitor at home. When I returned home I plugged my laptop back into my monitor, and now there are horizontal white lines flickering on the top 1.5 inches of the screen. I have cleaned the HDMI ports on both the laptop and the monitor, and disconnected/reconnected the monitor's power source.

Some interesting things I've noticed:

-Constantly moving the mouse pointer along the top of the screen, back and forth over and over again, removes the lines. Once I stop moving the mouse, the lines return and continue to flicker.

-Simply having the mouse pointer still at the top of the screen is not enough to remove the flickering.

-Pressing the print-scrn key and pasting the image into paint does not show the flickering lines. I tried it at least 10 times, thinking I was just pressing it in between the flickers, but I am confident that print-scrn will not capture the lines. What does this mean?

-When I look at my screen on my laptop, there is no flicker. It only occurs on the monitor.

Seeing as this problem only arose after disconnecting the the laptop from the monitor, and the laptop screen appears to be working fine, I can only assume the problem lies either with the laptop port, the hdmi cable, or the monitor. Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so, how do you fix it? If an image of the lines is absolutely needed to diagnose my issue, I can try and take a picture of it on my phone and upload it to imgur.

I had a problem with another Acer monitor malfunctioning extremely quickly, and it was not the result of my laptop hardware or the integrity of my cable. If history repeats itself,  I will have little choice but to throw this new monitor away and buy from another company.

Thanks for the help!

    arojam,

Sorry you are having problems with the monitor, let's see if we can narrow it down using your steps in this order (as needed):

    1. Please try another cable on the current monitor to see if the issue persists.
    2. Please try another monitor with the original cable to see if the issue persists.
    3. Please try a different cable with another monitor and see if the issue persists.

Hi!. I really wish you the best of luck with all that trouble shooting. I just got mine back a few days ago. Almost the same description, faint lines on the upper left side of the monitor. The included paperwork that came from the repair center said they replaced the mainboard. The monitor looks great now. I will be calling them back however, we use to have my computer on 1 input and the ps4 on the HDMI input. everything was fine before, except the faint white lines. Now the monitor stays flashing once we switch from dvi to HDMI. Here's the kicker... the HDMI alone works great on the computer. flashes with the ps4. We checked all kinds of settings on the ps4. we bought new cables.... nothing We tried works.
