Screen randomly not working

Hi.  I recently started having some trouble with my laptop, the screen wouldn't come on during powerup, fans and hard drive sounded to be running.  This has happened 3 times since it started a few days ago.  I was able to get the screen on by plugging in my parents old monitor into the serial port, it just popped up in the same instant I plugged it in.  I have also had my usb ports stop functioning.

 

On a forum somewhere that I cant find again, people with similar problems were told to take the back off the laptop and hit some sort of reset button on the motherboard.  Should I try this?  How can I find it?

We don't recommend that you attempt to disassemble the system unless you are very proficient at notebook repairs. If the display is working when you plug it in to an external video connection, and intermittently with the internal display itself, it sounds to me like there could be a hardware issue that would need to get resolved by a repair with Acer.
