5742G Power Issues

As of the other night, I started encountering problems with my Aspire 5742G.  I had it plugged into my external monitor, and after a few hours 3 lights started flashing (power, HDD and power/battery).  I unplugged the charging cable, plugged it back in - for about 15 seconds or so, it looked to be charging again, then the indicator froze.  About a minute after that, the 3 lights started flashing again.

I've ordered a new charging brick (the metal connector was quite warm, bordering hot), which I'm waiting on now.  I also dismantled the laptop and tried reseating the connector and cable - to no effect.  The current brick is a "replacement", not an official Acer/Liteon adapter (which I've ordered, to be safe).

Any ideas what the problem could be?  I'm dreading if I have to replace the motherboard - I can't seem to find a UK-based part (I have the 5742G model with a 540m 2GB GPU).

N.B. With the monitor unplugged, and not doing anything intense, the machine seems to charge and have this problem less often (though it does still happen).  Also though I should mention when I got the machine about 2-3 weeks ago, I removed the old thermal compound and applied Arctic Silver 5.  When I dismantled the machine, I cleaned that off and applied a new set of AS5.
