E1-522 8.1 64bit Video Driver

I'm about to throw this laptop out the window. This Aspire came with Win8. I upgraded to 8.1. All good. Something happened, had to reinstall Windows 8.1. Came to the Acer site, got the 8.1 64bit display driver and boom - crash, black screen on boot up. Revert back to a 2006 crappy Microsoft video driver. What am I missing? There's a Windows update for 8.1 that has an AMD driver, does the same thing. It's a Radeon 8240. Are there chipset drivers for this peice of *****? You know what else? USB 3.0 never worked.

Acer needs to get their stuff together and create entire PACKAGES of their driver sets for their models and make sure they WORK properly. I'd like to know why the Windows 7 driver is more up to date than the Windows 8 one for this model.

Anyway - anyone else have this issue at all??

Please check if the BIOS version is updated to V2.09.  Download BIOS V 2.09
To check BIOS version, Press and hold the Window logo key and tap X on your keyboard, select Run, and then type msinfo32 and hit the Enter key. In the System Information window, click System Summary and locate your current BIOS Version/Date to the right.
After updating BIOS, you may go ahead and install the AMD display adapter for windows 8.1

    Hi Sharanji,

I very much appreciate the quick response and advice, but alas, that did not solve the problem. Catalyst crashes, if I try to install without Catalyst it crashes, everything crashes, except this 8 year old driver I'm using now. I'm at my wits end.

I happen to work in IT and unfortunately this is the way of the world these days - mediocrity. The Lego movie had it wrong, everything is NOT awesome, everything is *****.

Maybe the 8 driver will work, but I already tried that. Already tried the 7 driver too. That was before I re-installed 8.1 for the third time. I'll go ahead though and download them again from Acer's awesomely fast site!

You may try restoring the same display driver from Acer recovery manangement.
Use the following steps to reinstall a driver or application on your computer:
Press the Windows key to open the Start screen. Type Recovery in the search box. Click Acer Recovery Management in the search results.  If asked to allow the program to make changes, click Yes.  Click Reinstall Drivers or Applications. On the Contents tab, locate the Amd display driver or application you wish to install and click the Install icon.

NO surprise. I don't seem to have any recovery software installed anymore. Alt-F10 is NOT working, but I can tell you I still have the partition on the hard drive that i can see when i go to re-install 8.1.

How can I restore to factory settings? I'm through with 8.1.

I don't know who to blame, MYSELF I GUESS,  but this has been the MOST frustrating experience I've EVER had with a computer. EVER. Can't download OEM from Microsoft becasue of their stupid practices, 8.1 is obviously not very good, I want to go back to factory settings, CAN'T, no recovery software after a refresh of the OS, display drivers crashing, download site slower than molasses. Lesson learned.
