My laptop is COOKING (literally)! Aspire V5-552PG

Hello, need some desperate help here before my computer melts.

I've had a Acer Aspire V5-552PG for about one and a half year (got no warranty anymore). Some days ago, I noticed the fans were suddenly running quite hard. This problem is so severe that if I'm skyping or something, the other person hears the fans on my computer.

I downloaded a program called Open Hardware Monitor to check the temperatures on the computer. The temperatures are going as high as 97 degrees. The computer has suddenly shut down a few times becuase of this. There's no errors or reports.

BUT... this almost only happens with the battery charger connected to the laptop.

The problem seems to be the Core Speed "reving" up from 2495 MHz to 3194 MHz when i plug in the charger.

Any help is extremely appreciated!

By the way, I have opened the laptop and cleaned the fans. Everything looks normal. The fans are running as they should.

No viruses, and the computer doesn't seem any slower than before.

  • Hi,

Laptop over heating could be of various reasons, normally suspected inadequate Ventilation or cooling of Processor. 97Deg is bit on the higher level. I find this an issue with the Processor or the processor cooling system. if the unit has a warranty contact support.
NOTE: Suggested not to use the unit as it could harm self or properties.

I doubt the ventilation is inadequate since I have opened it up and cleaned it. I can feel the fans at the back running.

The thing is, it seems to run pretty normal most of the time. Right now it has the charger connected and the temperature is 30-60. This seems to be only happening sometimes, especially right after connecting the charger. Very sudden spikes of temperature.

Is there any way I can diagnose this myself without sending it for repair? Open it up and feel where the heat comes from? I found a somewhat similar thread where they concluded with the HDD not working as it should.

    Thanks for helping me!

Some critics for Acer (no pun intended, i just wanna help):

By the way, this forum was REALLY (and then i mean really, big time) hard to find and post questions. I think I used about 30 minutes or so just finding the login button and registering, and I'm pretty experienced with alot of forums. Plus, as an european, these very broad forum sections does not make any sense for me. Searching for "notebooks" gave me no results about computers, and isn't netbooks supposed to be smaller versions of laptop's?

Also; I contaced Acer directly on the free chat (Answers By Acer) to get any further help. I described my problems as good as I could with all the symptoms and whatnot. I got very dissapointed by the help I got. Waited a long time before I got answers, and when i got an answer it was something like this; "You have to pay to get help.." (dots following all of the answers, did he have a bad day at work?).

I was actually up for paying for a 3 day 99,99$ remote help, but the result was me being suddenly left alone/disconnected from chat after giving my whole personal information. EVEN without a "good bye" or any further information. I hope this isn't the normal customer support Acer delivers to it's customers.

TDLR; The free support I got yesterday from Acer felt like a really hard punch in the face. I got a big impression that the whole thing was like "give us money, or leave us alone" which is a very bad customer support in contrast to other computer companies I have been in contact with.

This makes me really sad when I see you (as an Acer employee yourself) give a thousand time better answer on your spare-time, rather than the support guys themself.

    Sorry for my bad english.

    Sorry for flooding this thread with lots of words, but this seem to be when the problem is happening;

The four Core's look like running at three different speeds, 1397 MHz, 2495 MHz and finally 3194 MHz.

When it goes up to 3194 MHz, the problems start to occur fast. The computer almost instantly goes up to about 70-80 degrees. The thing is that the core's seem to only go up to this speed after the battery charger has been connected, when there is no processes eating up the CPU load (just the browser, antivirus and origin/skype or steam).

This makes me question if this might have something with the AC adapter itself or the charger settings on computer, and maybe a system restore can be helpful?

If not, I'll send it to the repair shop where i bought it (which will probably be a minimum of 500$ for a broke student like me, thats the pricess where I live Smiley Sad).

Thanks for the help so far, kudos to you!

    Hi,

It's been about 8 moths since you posted this, but I'm now running to the same problem as you. My computer CPU temperature is running up to the 114C and that's pretty ridiculous. Above the top row of my keyboard get's extremely HOT and you can burn yourself if you touch it for too long. I just switched to Windows 10 for about a month and a half.

The only modification is that I put in a 256GB SSD replacing the 1TB HDD. Things such as my touchpad gestures are now not existant. I wonder if you eventually figured out why it was getting so hot. My suspicions are that the thermal paste on the CPU dried up. I seldumly play on this laptop as it has a decent discreet graphics card. Other than that I had no problems.

I recentl also just updated the BIOS to version 2.07 from 2.02. I wonder if that had anything to do with it. Hope to hear from you.

    Thanks

I had to send mine back to the electronic store where I bought the laptop. They sent it to the reapir store after testing it. Luckily I still had warranty (3 or 5 years i think).

Results: They had to replace the motherboard, clean dust. They also checked thermal paste, which was ok.

The laptop is running great now.

That sounds great. Unfortunately, I didn't get an extra warranty from a store since I bought it online. Good to hear yours is doing fine. It might be time to.move on to a new laptop. 14" seems better for me. Thanks for replying!

    Hi again,

Sorry to bother  you, but what does your CPU temperature idle at now? I just want to make sure if I try something I can have a baseline to compare to.

I use a free program called Speccy by Piriform to check. I still have a 88-90+C temp on my CPU

Do you use a different program?

    Thank you very much!

    No problem.

I've checked the temperature a couple of times. It is usually around 45-62.

I used a program called Hot CPU Tester.
