change default email program, acer w4

This should be simple, but I can't figure it out, I want to make gmail my default email and calendar and switch the hotmail to my secondary?  It came with hotmail/outlook/microsoft as the default, and I was able to add the gmail, but not make it the default and cannnot use the calendar this way, although I have made a shortcut for it on the desktop.  But I'd like my google calendar in the start/charm menu.
