Hello –

Computer: Asus laptop (not sure exact model, typing this question from a different location than where the computer is) running Windows 7

Control Room Monitor: ACER p205h

TVs Discussed in Post: SHARP Aquos LC-80LE642U   (80” TV)   and  SANYO DP26648   (26” TV)

My apologies for the length. A lot of detail.

Here is some background information on my question. Our church had for 15 years used an old projector and screen to display words to songs, videos, pictures, sermon notes, etc. The computer that all of this originates from is a laptop running Windows 7. The connection from the computer to the projector was VGA. We did an “extended” display setup so that what was being displayed to the projector was not seen on our laptop desktop. To be able to monitor what was showing on the screen (it’s at a place that is not easy to see from the control room), I hooked up a VGA splitter. I ran VGA from computer to the splitter input, then one of the outputs to the projector and the other output to an ACER p205h monitor that we had at the church but were not using. Doing this allowed us to see what was on the screen in our control room on the monitor. Very helpful for things like videos or picture videos that we had to drag over to the second desktop and hit play on.

Because of the age of the projector we had, we recently changed our display method at the church. We bought and mounted an 80” TV and ran HDMI over cat6 cable to the TV from the computer. Looks great, very sharp, much better than the old projector. Once we got all the kinks worked out with that, my focus turned to how we could have our control room monitor to see in our room what was on the screen. Since I couldn’t come out of both HDMI and VGA on the computer, I had to look at other ways to try to use our ACER monitor we have.

Here is how I set things up to try it…

* HDMI cable from laptop computer to input of an HDMI splitter

* Output 1 from splitter is HDMI/cat6 cable that runs to TV

* Output 2 from splitter – using “XCELLON HDMI to VGA adapter with audio” adapter - HDMI end of adapter plugged in to splitter and then my VGA cord plugs in to other end of adapter and connects to VGA input on ACER monitor

With this setup as I described, it kills my feed to the main display TV (the 80” TV) and an error message on the control room ACER monitor reads “INPUT NOT SUPPORTED.” When I unplug the adapter and VGA cord connection to the monitor and “refresh” things, my 80” TV display shows back up. If I disconnect the HDMI from the laptop and plug VGA directly in to the laptop and run it straight to the monitor there is no problem either. So I know the issue is not with the VGA cable or the computer. It seems to be centered on the HDMI splitter, the HDMI feeds, or the adapter.

Out of curiosity, I grabbed a 26” TV (SANYO DP26648) from one of the children’s Sunday School rooms and put it in my control room.

I ran the following setup with that TV:

* HDMI cable from laptop computer to input of an HDMI splitter

* Output 1 from splitter is HDMI/cat6 cable that runs to TV

* Output 2 from splitter is HDMI cable that runs to the 26” TV in control room.

It worked perfectly. Exactly what I was hoping for. The 26” TV showed the same thing that the main 80” TV was showing.

Any ideas on why I’m getting the “INPUT NOT SUPPORTED” message on my ACER p205h monitor with the setup I described? Is this a resolution issue? I realize the easy fix here may be to spend $100 and buy a 19” TV and use it as my control room monitor, but I’d like to be able to use my ACER monitor if I’m able to.

Thanks!

  • Hi,

I understand you've tried all possible options, Did you check the Resolution settings & also have you tried to reduce the resolution in your computer that matches the Acer Monitor?

Thank you for the reply. So I went in and tried what you mentioned. I noticed the following. When I plug in just the 80" TV via HDMI, it gives me two options within the display settings. By default it goes to "Mobile PC Display" under Display and the resolution lists as 1366x768. The other option (that it doesn't go to by default) under Display is SHARP HDMI (the TV). When I click on that, it changes the Resolution to 1920x1080.

When I connect the laptop to ONLY the ACER p205h monitor (the HDMI is not involved in any way), the monitor works as expected. Under the display settings within control panel, Display lists "Mobile PC Display." The resolution defaults at 1600x900.

With everything plugged in the way I would like it to (the one that kills my 80" TV feed and also gives the INPUT NOT SUPPORTED), I messed around in Display settings with different Displays and Resolutions but had no luck. Set resolution to 1366x768, set it to 1600x900. Nothing showed on either display.
