Can anyone offer any help?

Thank you!

as far as i know, you can't.

you can install third party programs but not move the microsoft store applications.

    I'm not an Acer employee.
  • Hi,

Windows 8.1 Does not have a option to move apps installed from MS Store, but any applications installed from other sources can be installed to External memory, choose the destination folder when you install the apps. Cheers

Hmm so far it's proving to not be possible to do this specific task unless someone golden comes along with a hack!

Does anyone know if it's possible to change the location of data downloaded to apps to another location?  For example for reader apps, magazine apps such as Next issue, or audio apps like Audible?  Can I change the location of the downloaded files?  I often use my device offline & am out of space on the internal hd.

Or perhaps info on how to change the location of where files download from the internet browser to the SD card?

Or perhaps photo storage location to SD card?

Just trying to free up some space on my device and if I can't move apps I have to figure out something.

Thanks for any & all help is appreciated!

  • Hi,

YES, you can move Files downloaded to External memory & also when you download the Files you will find an option to save as were you can specify the Destination folder,. Cheers

Or just move the files to a directory on the SD card, then add the drive/directory name to the PATH enviromental variable so that Windows looks in that directory when a file is commanded. Just make sure never to remove the card. Or just create a shortcut with full specification. Or diddle the registy values.

As otheras have said the traditional Windows apps can be moved fairly easily. It's tougher to do with the Metro apps, but still possible. Use at your own risk of course and I don't know if you'll have to figure out how to make an SD card into a non-removable drive or not...

Other than the "you can't" answers the others are not even close as they are lacking technical understanding of windows.

Some apps you can and some you cant. It depends a lot on the apps if they are meant to be Portable. Portable apps refer to being installable on a portable device like a USB flash drive. Do some searching on PortableApps.com and see if  there is anything there you need, then download them and save and install to the SD card and then run them from there.

Most apps store internal stuff (they need to run) in the Registry and pointing that stuff to the SD card is a lot harder. Not impossible, but harder and not for the non-technical. In fact any smart technical soul would strongly advise against even trying, my advice too. Smiley Happy

As suggested, changing the Path may help, but very unlikely unless it is really simple software.

As suggested, simply downloading them to the SD is useless advice as there is no guarantee they will run from the SD.

Another option is that if they are apps you installed from a CD or downloaded .msi (Microsoft Installer) files then uninstall them and then install them on the SD card. The installation system will know if they can be run from the SD and disallow the install if they can't.

So, check PortableApps and then get back here and let us know what apps you want to move to the SD.

Another option MIGHT be, to store the data the apps generate on the SD card. But, that will depend on each app as to whether they will allow you defining the storage location.

Just checked Billsey's link to AskVG and that is total waste of time as he describes in the last paragraph or two when updates happen. Total nonsense.

If you reread that article he says it only works well if you first uninstall all apps, do the move, then reinstall all apps. That gets you to the point where they should work correctly, since everything is pointing to the proper file location. By far too much hassle for me to ever thing about doing it, but the OP might believe it needed in their environment.
