Asipire 7540 crashes a couple times a day

I bought this laptop used a couple weeks ago. Usually, it only crashes overnight when I am not using it. But sometimes it crashes while I am in the middle or typing an email, loading a webpage, whatever. No error messages. The screeen goes blank, and the power light is still on. At first, I thought it was going into hibernation mode since it was only happening when I wasn't using it. I went into power saving mode and told it to never hibernate. But now it is doing it while I am actively using it.

The only thing I can do is hold the power button down to force it to shut down, then start it again. It always comes up with the "start windows normally" screen, and then boots up just fine.

Any idea what this might be? I really like this computer. It  has been doing everything else just fine, a big improvement from my previous laptop that was dying. But I have to be careful to save frequently, and it is a little annoying to have to reboot and reopen everything I was working on.

  • As it is second hand, I would definitely perform a complete system restore as you will have no idea of the condition of the OS in terms of what may have been installed (your problem may be virus or malware related).
If your recovery partition is missing or damaged, I would purchase restore media from Acer.

Did you try updating the video drivers and disable HDD sleep in power saving option? I had this issue with my lappy and disabling the HDD sleep to never in the advanced options of power option seems to have fixed it for me.

I marked never for sleep and hibernate for both plugged in and battery. Also lid closed.

I will try updating the video driver.

not having much luck. Under display adaptor, it has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series and that says it has the most updated driver.

Under audio, video, and game controller, it shows two audio devices, and both have the lastest driver. I'm not seeing something specific for video card.

I've tried a Belard Advisor report, and I am not seeing anything that sounds like a video card, except the display.
