Acer Aspire V5 - safe to install linux?

I have an Acer Aspire V5-531 that came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit preinstalled.

Is it safe to try to shrink the partitions and install Linux alongside the Windows?

I've read a few horror stories posted on discussion boards about being unable to boot even to the BIOS after trying to install a different operating system than the original one installed on the Acer V5. However, the cases I have seen reported involved Windows 8, so I am wondering whether I can avoid those sorts of problems since this computer has Windows 7.

And if it is safe, are there essential steps I should take before starting, in order to avoid problems?

  • If you care about recovery, only shrink the C: drive. The recovery partitions are small so shrinking them won't give you much.you must have at least a 500gb so give yourself 100 gb or so for Linux.

Just to add to what philetus wrote...

Create a set of Recovery media in case you want to get back to Windows 7. It's your best bet and if you need Acer to provide them in the future they run from 20 to 45$
