I brought my 15 year old niece a Aspire v5 123-3472(running windows 8) this past July...now when she turns it on the Acer logo comes up and than about 3 seconds letter the screen saver screen comes up (shows date, time internet connection) click on that and again wait another 4-5 seconds and than her password screen comes up ( on that screen it has on the botton shows the logo to turn the system off) once you put the password in total black screen... BUT if there are updates ready it will show those in the corner or middle of the screen but the background is still black....I can't get to a start menu, a control panel nothing! I've tried the Fn+F5 Fn+F6, tried the F8... what the heck could cause this? the darn thing isn't a good 2 months old yet! any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Try this:

    1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
    2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
    3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
    4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
    5) START IT UP..

Have you tried starting in safe mode?

I can't get to safe mode...when I power up I start the F8 key and I keep hitting the key and than her screen saver comes up I've tried continuing to with the F8 and than her password screen comes up...I've even tried the F8 after the password screen...nothing is working...what would cause this to happen after only a couple of months?

Are you hitting f8 once or rapid tap tap taping from the second you push the power? If you can't ge tinto safe mode you have other problems besides a a black screen after login. Can you get into Bios? ?

I'm doing rapid tapping as soon as I power up... how do I get to the BIOS?

F2 If you can get in Bios, set boot from CD at top of boot.exit saving changes.Download hiren's boot cd, unzip ir and burn it to a cd.Boot from it in the V5 and backup the hdd. You'll need a external hdd to save it to.Then you can try Alt/F10 at the Acer screen and see if it will start recovery, if it still has original hdd, or try booting from a windows cd.
