I bought an ACER TimelineX 3830TG from an ad on my local classified ads site (usedcowichan) and when I was researching the computers specs I saw that it has the ability to have a smartcard reader installed on it. There is a removable cover ont the bottom panel and there are all the contacts & mountig points for installing one to it. I very very very much want to buy the module and if I can get the part shipped to me somehow install it myself. I fix and repair laptops, desktops, and mobile devices for a living and to be honest I normally wouldn't buy a system that didn't have a 15.6 LCD but due to the simcard reader that it can have I bought it regardless.

I have been drooling about getting one for it and whinging at being unable to find one or if I even can get the exact one for my laptop (huawei 3g module there are two different models you can get apparently) I would like to get the correct one. Failing that I would like to get a technical drawing (aka schematic diagram) that lists the pinout for the modules contact points on the motherboard. So that should I choose to take the risk of soldering on a simcard reader (or reader/writer would be even better) to the board instead of just getting a USB based module.

I like the challenge and love to do this type of work myself rather than pay someone else to have all the fun. I am more than capable of doing this type of work and have the experience with electronics that I would need in order to do a worthy job and not damage anything in the attempt. You use a hammer and nails to attach it right? and a skill saw to cut the holes you need. See I know what I am doing.

Above, you mention a "smartcard reader" and a "simcard reader".

The 3G module is neither of those things.

From information I have been able to find, the card is:

    Huawei EM770W

    Part number:  LC.21300.066 or LC.21300.068

Thanks for the reply and I thought the slot for the simcard/smartcard was all part of the same unit. I didn't know that you also needed another piece of hardware that resembles a notebooks WiFi adapter too. Oh and because i don't remember if my system has one two slots, one forthe WiFi and one for the 3G module. ( I haven't seem one before but know that sometimes when there are two slots for adapters they can be diffeent in size. When I have noticed that in the past it is usually for a bluetooth adapter.

I noticed that there is a tiny little bluetoothe adapterm that is located in a small hollow under the keyboard and is just above where the F2-F5 keys are form what I can remember. And I have only been able to get the bluetooth to work under Windows 8 for some reason it doesn't work in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or Windows 7 64bit. I assumed it was either not present or was broken when I bought this system used.  And I have since switched back to Windows 7 (mine is an atheros Bluetooth btw) from Windows 8 (win8 is still too buggy for me to keep it installed at the moment) but it does know it's there but the bluetooth app doesn't work and it doesn't show up in device manager either as an unknown device or as a a bluetooth adapter. And am wondering if anyone knows if there are any issues witht anything similar for Windows 7 or 8 (and I'm too lazy to start a new thread, it's 5am and I have been up all night because my computer is a surrogate for Crack it seems, as sad as that may sound it's healthier than actual Crack or Alcohol, etc...
