    Jack,

I tried the troubleshooter but no luck. However, what is odd is that warning tones from the computer, eg arrival of email,  are still happening. I've plugged a speaker into the jack so I can listen but the warning tones are definitely coming from the computer, not the speaker. I wondered if it might be that the audio system is simply noy talking to iTunes but if I select a news channel with videos on the internet I can't get sound there either. It seems really weird - selective operation.

    Jack,

Tried the troubleshooter but no go. Still nothing except via a plug in speaker which works fine.

Re the last but one response ignore about the waning tone, I was mishearing, it was coming from the speaker, not the computer.

    Hi John

Search for "sound" in control panel. Start selecting whatever pops up that seems related to your problem and start experimenting. At this point, that's about all I can suggest from your description of the problem. I really think it's just a sound setting that's messed up.  Beyond that, if you get really frustrated, I can only suggest you try erecovery mgt to factory defaults while saving your data option.
