Network adapter stopped functioning

My acer aspire, which is  4 years old recently stopped recognizing the internet.  It does recognize my local in house network, but will not log onto the internet, either wirelessly or by a direct connection.  I tried to uninstall the Network adapter, and then have it reinstalled from the driver as per Acer's directions on their web site, but get the message that the install failed. Help
