My Inspire 7750 lost it's optical drive (Mat**bleep**a 7750).

My machine is 2 years old running 7/64.  It runs good, but was slow and bloated (confession is...).  I fix this by reformatting. Done it for lots of years, usually with a problem or two, but got it done.  Was really happy this time 'cause while I didn't reformat the hard drive, the system disks worked well.  I was reloading data when a large Win update came in.  It and a couple others following downloaded and installed.  When I got back to loading data, the dvd drive was dead.  The drawer opened and closed manually, but nothing happened.  No spin, no sound.

I rebooted and came up with an error message.  There was a compatably problem, drive might not function properly.  (Got that right.)  Tried the, 'Update Driver', and was told the 'latest driver was installed'.  Tried a couple of the 'look for fix on web' things, with no luck.

I never had a drive or its driver go bad on me.  Do they just quit?  I think something in an update stepped on the existing driver.

If I download the driver, can I just erase the current one and paste in the download or is there a procedure to follow.

Thanks in advance for any help

It is possible for optical drives to go bad, but the timing seems odd. Are you using Acer OEM recovery media? If you put a recovery disk in, and set the BIOS to boot to the optical drive, does it attempt to boot from the drive?
