Aspire M5-583P disabling edge swipe w/elan touchpad to prevent charmbar from appearing Windows 8.1

After getting this new laptop and upgrading to Windows 8.1 plus the update, I have been fighting the stupid charm bar appearance when I would move the cursor with the elan trackpad (and accidently swiping from right to left). After searching high and low, I found nothing on how to turn this off, just a lot of cursing at Microsoft for hard-coding this stupid feature in.

So out of despiration, I decided to try an old elantech driver from Windows 7 from another Acer laptop after seeing some archived posting and the fact it showed there being a toggle for swiping. Afer completely removing the current driver and installing version TouchPad_ELANTECH_11.6.2.1_W7x64_A I found this versio DID have an option to turn off edge swipe. And when I unchecked it, I got rid of the STUPID MICROSOFT CHARMBAR from appearing. Why elan removed this and why Acer did not make them fix it I have no idea, as MANY people complained about how unproductive this problem was. In fact, I was ready to return this laptop for a different brand if I couldn't get it resolved. Now to be upfront, there are many missing features in this older driver that are in the newest one, and I have no idea if bugs will show up in the future. But for me, ANYTHING to get rid of the charmbar appearance was worth a try. And it has been working fine for the few days I have had it installed.

So, if you have this laptop and you keep bringing up the charmbar by accident due to swiping the touchpad, that was one way I figured out how to do it. Third party programs that are supposed to prevent the charmbar from appearing did not work, so save your time!
