Id like to boot from a USB Caddy?

Hi guys, hope someone can help...

I recently got a new SSD for my Acer ASpire 5742 as a replacement for the factory Acer HDD. I have installed it no problems & it is working fine.

The only thing I miss is having Microsoft Office starter (preinstalled in factory) from the original HDD & I dont belive this can be transferred to my new SSD.

As a result, I would like to boot my old HDD with Office on it, from a caddy attached to the laptop by USB (with the SSD still installed). I attempted to do this, by selecting the old HDD to boot first from the bios settings. Even at initial boot up, the lasp top seems to freeze when the caddy is attached but "comes alive" again the second the caddy usb cable is removed.

Maybe this is a real dumb question, but is it possible to boot from my old HDD in a caddy via USB while my new SSD is installed "inside" the laptop? Both drives have Windows 7 home installed.

Many thanks Smiley Happy

The answer is: It depends. Your old installed Windows 7 will never boot from USB. That's because it was not prepared for that. Official this kind of installation is not supported anyway. There are techniques to install Windows 7 successfully on an USB stick but it's slow like hell. I talk about hours of boot time. So, the answer is in the end, no.

How about installing Office Starter on your new harddisk?

Hi, thanks so much for the reply Smiley Happy I would love to install Office Starter on my new SSD although I dont know how. You see, it was preinstalled on the factory HDD (the one I now know will not boot from my caddy). I think it is installed on the recovery partition on that drive but I dont really know. Im not sure how I could transfer if to my new SSD? Ideally I would love to be able to transfer it. Any help would be so much appreciated.

It just means now that if I want to use office, Im having to switch the drives. Which , while not a lenghty job becomes a pain in the behind after a few times...
