Dual Boot Win 8 and Win 7 UEFI GPT Aspire e1-510?

Hello all; I bought the E1-510 for my wife and she's not too thrilled with Windows 8 to say the least.

I've kind of grown into it a bit myself, after learning the tweaks to get it more like a real OS.

I completed the UEFI/BIOS update (211) and installed Win 7 on another hard drive in legacy MBR BIOS mode. Got all working -drivers from Intel, Acer 8, Atheros, etc. Check some of the Acer 8 drivers - they also cover Win 7. You have to check the .inf files in the package to see. FIRST and foremost is to get the Intel chipset, Intel unified graphics driver, and LAN drivers. You're looking for Intel Celeron processor J & N series with the n3520 processor and integrated Intel HD graphics. The drivers for Win 7 are all there on Intel's website and they install fine and work!

Got all the Win 7 drivers installed (even wireless and bluetooth)  and it performs well in WIn 7, but only in legacy MBR BIOS mode. My wife's happy to have Win 7, but not only did we pay for Win 8, but as I said, I kind of have gotten used to it. I would like to dual boot both OSes off the same hard drive instead of swapping out drives everytime I want to boot a different OS.

What prevents Win 7 from being installed in dual boot with the pre-installed win 8? Win 7 starts to load from a UEFI memory stick, but always fails with the ridiculous red bar across the top. WTF?

Note; All of the above and below done with 'secure boot' DISABLED and with 64 bit installers. I suspect that this red bar thingy is caused by the Intel Trusted Execution Engine that is part of the Acer UEFI BIOS for this model. After updating the BIOS to .211 which gave me legacy boot option (thank you Acer), I should NOT have done the second step of installing the TEXI-1089 (Intel Trusted Execution Engine Interface). I believe this is causing the RED BAR fail with Win 7 in UEFI on GPT disks. Can someone from ACER tech confirm this? What causes the red bar on this model when trying to install Win 7 in UEFI with GPT partitions? Setup loads files into memory and the Win 7 installer tries to start the PC, but then the dreaded RED BAR appears across the top and the computer goes into a infinite loop.

Note: I even used Macrium Reflect (awesome product) to image the Win 7 MBR hard drive (referenced above). Swapped out the disks and started up on the pre-installed Win 8 (now 8.1) drive. Made the recovery stick in the Reflect program using WPE 5.0 (for UEFI/WIndows 8).

CRAZY - the computer actually starts from this UEFI stick. The Reflect program runs beautifully (unlike the WIn 7 installer) - no RED BAR. I then restored the Win 7 MBR image into empty (unallocated) space I had created on the Win 8 GPT hard drive. Success - it took the image. I now had a 'working' Win 7 on the GPT disk. All I had left was to fix the boot record to boot both OSes. Reflect (did I mention that this is an awesome program?) has a little wizard just for that purpose. It scans the hard drive, detects Windows installations, list them, and then re-writes the UEFI BCD to reflect both installs. It even named them correctly (8.1 and 7 Home Premium). I thought I was home free at this point. I re-started the computer, removed the stick, and voila! I had a standard duel boot menu with the two OSes listed. I clicked on Win 7 and it began to start up - HOLY MOLY - I was excited! BUT THEN the dreaded RED BAR appeared across the top and it froze in that infinate loop - NO JOY again with Win 7 in UEFI on GPT disk with the Acer E1-510 laptop. I restarted the computer and chose Win 8 which it booted into fine.

SO WHY does WIN 7 (whether the install or a working system) cause that RED BAR across the top when trying to start the computer? There must be a work around or a way to get a dual boot Win 8 (pre-installed) and Win 7 on this machine in UEFI on GPT disk. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

    PHubb,

I am sorry your are running into this problem, but as for our support on this issue I can only suggest you doing a search on how to setup a dual boot on a preinstalled Windows 8 unit. I myself have found one and this may provide you with a more viable solution/approach then how you are going about doing it. Again this is only an example as there are manay other methods out there.
