Do I have to update my BIOS for 8.1?

I have another post about having to recover my tablet, a Iconia W700. Updating to 8.1 made everything much worse.

Contacted Acer and they told me that the BIOS must be updated first or 8.1 won't work correctly.

I am no genius, but if that is true, how are most windows users supposed to, first, know that, and second, know how to do it? Seems like a terrible update if the firmware has to be updated in order for it to work.

Another question, do I have to reinstall windows and then run update until it finally becomes ready for 8.1 or is there a way to skip right to 8.1?

Thanks

It is not necessary to update the BIOS before loading Windows 8.1, however, it can help reduce problems upgrading on some products. If you are already on Windows 8, just run all of the Windows updates and you should be prompted to load 8.1.
