Windows update failed. Don't want to brick it. Need help

I just got my Revo RL80-UR23.  Win8 booted up fine.  Went to get the usual windows updates.  All 102 of them (~1GB).  Clicked install.  At installation of 99% it failed and spent several hours reverting back to before the updates.   For a while there I thought I was going to be stuck.  It would not revert back and what would I do if the boot was corrupted.

Luckily it finally did come back, but it made me think I better have a backup plan if this happens.  Documentation for this on Acer is thin.  Can someone help answer some questions?

  • If the if the unit will not boot what can I do?

  • Can I access the bios to change things like boot order?  if so, how do i access the bios?
  • I may want to try Windows 7.  How can I retain a copy of the Win8 OS and Windows key for reinstall?
  • Acer is recommending I upgrade firmware before updating to Win 8.1.  Should I be concerned or is this process pretty foolproof?

  • In Acer Support I see Upgrade to Window 8.1 "FLOW"  What is flow?  Never heard of it.  Do I want 8.1 or 8.1 flow?

Thanks in advance for any help.  It would be appreciated.

With Windows 8 you will eventually want to update to Windows 8.1. The Upgrade flow can be found here: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/update-to-windows81. That is the suggested method and has worded for all of our units we have tested and customers to my knowledge. I would recommend doing updates a few at a time and not all at once. It is recommended to install only the recommended and critical updates first.

If you want to try another operating system, first create your Windows 8 USB recovery media.

You can access the BIOS/UEFI by pressing the Delete key when performing a cold boot. You can also access it from within Windows using the following steps: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27103.

After going at the updates again I was successful.  I also followed the Win 8.1 upgrade instructions minus the bios update.  All went fine.  Thx.
