I would like to inform you that that Acer does not recommend altering the factory shipped Operating System.Changing the Operating System may cause driver conflicts. You have the option of upgrading or changing your Operating System at your own discretion. However, it is preferred that you keep to the original configuration of your system so that all the programs and applications in your computer will recognize all the hardware installed in it.

Here's the weblink has steps recommened by Microsoft for upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 how to upgrade

You may go through the five steps in the above weblink before upgarding to windows 7.
The step 2 has information on using  windows easy transfer, a free download, to help you move your files and settings to another location before you install Windows 7.
If you don't use Windows Easy Transfer, you'll need to copy your files manually to an external location, such as CDs, DVDs, an external hard disk, or a USB flash drive before installing Windows 7, and then move them back after Windows installation is completed.

The other option is to connect the orginal hard disk as a secondary hard disk in your computer since you are installing a new hard disk for installing windows 7. All the infromation will be intact in the orginal hard disk if something goes wrong while upgatading to windows 7. You may use the orginal hard disk and boot the computer again to check if any infromation is needed later.

Since windows 7 driverc are not avaliable for this computer, you may use the hardware vendor utility to find the hardware manufacturer, then you may download and install the required driver directly from the device manufactiter website. for example if the suiod device is Realtek, you need to directly download the driver from Realtek website.
