How to get to the settings list that we are use to in the Control panel. This applies to in 8.1:

1. Right click the Window "pain" , bottom left.

2. Select "Control Panel"

3. Under "System and Security" click "Find and fix problems"

4. Now here is the weird part: See the arrow pointing UP in the bar at the top. (not the arrow pointing right or left, it points up). Click that.

There you go.

If you know of another way, please post it here. Certainly I am missing an easier way. I use the "desktop" mode in 8.1.

Who at Microsoft sits around trying to make our life more miserable? Whoever has that position must make big bucks because they are doing a GREAT job. :-)

    hi....Smiley Happy

Windows 8.1 lets you go straight into the classic desktop mode from the moment you power on your
Enabling boot to desktop in windows 8.1 is as easy as clicking through to a submenu and checking a box.
    Here’s how you do it.
    1. Right click on the taskbar and select Properties in desktop mode.
    2. Click on the Navigation tab.
Check “Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in.”
Check “Show my desktop background on Start” also if you want the Start Screen to have the same wallpaper as the desktop.
    Click Ok.
The next time you boot your computer and log in, windows 8.1 will take you straight to desktop mode.

There are many ways to get the control panel.

Go to the Desktop and right click the taskbar. Then, go to Toolbars and select Desktop. This adds a Desktop toolbar to the right side of the taskbar. Click on it and then go to Control Panel,  it displays the main sections and shortcuts from the Control Panel.

You can quickly open it by pressing Windows + R on your keyboard. Then, type control panel and hit Enter or press OK.

The fastest way to start most programs is to use search. While on the Start screen, start typing control panel. Before you finish typing the first word, the Control Panel search result is displayed.

Another quick way to launch the Control Panel is to pin its shortcut to the Start screen, so that you can click or tap on it with ease. While on the Start screen, start typing control panel and then right-click or press and hold the Control Panel search result. In the contextual menu, click or tap Pin to Start. If you are a Desktop user, you can also pin the shortcut to the taskbar, by clicking or tapping Pin to Taskbar.

Another way is to use the Charms.  Go to the Start screen or the Desktop. Then press Windows + C to view the charms and press Settings. On a device with touch, flick from the right side of the screen and press Settings.

press Windows + X on your keyboard and click the Control Panel entry in this menu. The same menu can be accessed with a right-click (or press and hold) on the Start button.

Another way to start the Control Panel is to use the File Explorer. Go to This PC and then to the Computer tab on the ribbon.

    As always thanks  Sharanji!

My point was not getting to the new Control Panel, it was how to get to the long list of settings we are fimiliar with in the previous versions of Windows.

Out of curiousity did you even try what I wrote. Thanks again. Have a great day. Incidentally the first part of your post was unrelated to this post. But thanks anyway.
