Aspire V5-122p, need Windows 8 product key to upgrade to Windows 8.1

I recently purchased an Aspire V5-122p, and I'm trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1.  When I attempt to do so, it asks for a product key for Windows 8.  I used a utility that revealed the product key for the version of Windows that came factory installed, but that does not seem to work for the upgrade.  It keeps rejecting the code and telling me that I need to provide a new one.

What gives?  Did I not also purchase a legit version of Windows along with my laptop?  Why can't I upgrade?

It sounds like you might be trying to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1. If so, that will not work because the key provided by the OEM (Acer) is labeled as an OEM key it won't allow you progress through Mircosoft's process.

I would recommend viewing this article on how to upgrade to Windows 8.1: http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32009

Also, in Windows 8, are you showing to be activated? You can hit Windows Key + Pause/Break to get to the screen from the desktop.
