Windows 8.1 and Acer Aspire V3-771G-9441

Last June I got an Acer Aspire V3-771G-9441. It came with Windows 8. Later I installed Windows 8.1. After some time I decided to use Driver Verifier, a program which puts stress on the drivers a user chooses. I started Windows later and discovered that Windows would crash, restart, and complete the process. I ended up entering Safe Mode in order to turn Driver Verifier off. This had been the only case Windows 8 had crashed.

Last Sunday I locked my computer and did something else. When I came back Windows was still at the lock screen. I was unaware however, that Windows had crashed. I found that out after logging in. I looked in Event Viewer and found a log entry about the crash, but still don't know why the crash occurred.

I ran Command Prompt as an administrator and used multiple commands. I used them in the order listed below.

  • Sfc.exe /scannow
  • Sigverif.exe
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • chkdsk C: /f /r
  • mdsched.exe

The first command is System File Checker. It protects system files and keeps a cache of current system files in case it needs to refresh a damaged file, according to a book I own named A++ Guide to Managing and Maintaining Your PC, Seventh Edition. Once it completed, it reported that it had found no issues.

The second command is Driver Signing and Digital Signatures. My book says When a device driver or other software is giving problems, use it to verify that the software has been approved by Microsoft. Once it completed, it also reported that it had found no issues.

The third command I used to try to fix an issue I have with Event Viewer. Upon clicking on Administrative Events an error message appears saying that I'll only get partial results. I found the command on the Microsoft website. A Microsoft employee posted it in response to another person having the same problem I'm having. At the time, the program said it had found and fixed something.

The fourth command is Chkdsk. My book says Use it to check and repair errors on a volume or logical drive. I was asked if I wanted it to run the next time I started Windows, which I agreed to.

The fifth and final command is Memory Diagnostics. It tests the RAM.

When I submitted the command for Memory Diagnostics I was asked whether I wanted to restart then or later. I chose the former option after closing Command Prompt. Windows restarted, Memory Diagnostics ran and completed, Windows restarted again, Chkdsk ran, and Windows restarted one more time before reaching the lock screen and automatically entering sleep mode.

On Monday I logged into Windows and ran Auslogics Disk Defrag, a program which allows me to defragment and optimize C:. After clicking the box to shut off my computer after the defragmentation and optimization was complete, I started the defragmenting and optimization process. This finished successfully, and my computer shut off.

Later that day I turned my computer back on and logged in. I looked in Event Viewer and found that C: along with three other volumes were healthy. I didn't see anything about the RAM test, so I believe that no problems were identified.

I have some questions. I am concerned about how Windows crashed and I'm hoping someone will help me out.

  1. Could not making sure the latest versions of the antivirus program and UEFI were installed before installing Windows 8.1 have caused the crash?
  2. Could not have uninstalling any drivers before installing Windows 8.1 have caused the crash?

I saw the Windows 8.1 update page on this website after I installed Windows 8.1. Having installing some service packs before and some other updates before, I didn't see why I would need to make sure I had the latest antivirus program and UEFI version, and why I would need to uninstall some drivers. I'm hoping I didn't mess up Windows.

Some more information about my computer is that it was manufactured on February 28, 2013. Its processor is a Intel Core i7-3630QM. It has a Nvidia GeForce GT 730M GPU. My antivirus program is Comodo Internet Security, which also includes a firewall. I have Windows Firewall off but not disabled as I read something about keeping it enabled. I have Windows Defender turned off and not disabled.

I am sorry to hear you are having crash problems since your Windows 8.1 update. It sounds like you have done a lot of testing and research of your own. To answer you two questions, Acer suggests updating your Antivirus software, BIOS, drivers to the most latest version before performing the Windows 8.1 update.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Microsoft is releasing a Windows 8.1 update in the spring and may address some of your concerns. I would still suggest returning to Windows 8 and make sure you are not experiencing the crashes. After that I would then perform all updates to your software, drivers and BIOS, then update all the critical and important updates before installing Windows 8.1.

I don't like removing any past updates from my computer. I also am not sure why I would need to have all the drivers on my computer have the latest versions because Windows 8.1 is an update, not a new operating system. I would understand if I was upgrading from a laptop running Windows 7 to Windows 8 with the Windows 8.1 update.

The log file says that BugcheckCode is 159, BugcheckParameter1 is 0x3, BugcheckParameter2 is 0xffffe000025c0060, BugcheckParameter3 is 0xffffd000206f5840, BugcheckParameter4 is 0xffffe000085c7170, SleepInProgress is 1, PowerButtonTimestamp is 0, and BootAppStatus is 0.
