Acer Aspire S3-391 wi-fi connectivity issue when external HDD plugged in

hi,

I have brand new Acer aspire s3-391 shipped with Windows 8 OEM preinstalled, upgraded to windows 8.1 and Samsung M3 slimline 1TB USB 3.0.

Network card - qualcomm atheros AR5BMD222, driver v10.0.0.225

My issue:

Anytime i plugged this HDD to any USB on my PC (both USB 3.0.1), wi-fi connection drops, signal of my wi-fi is very weak and cannot find any network anymore, it can see it if iam next to the router but once connected, the connection is LIMITED with no internet access and in few seconds disconnected.

So i thought maybe some power issue right? All settings for wi-fi adapter are on maximum performance in power settings. Option to "allow this PC to turn off this device" in device manager is NOT ticked. Iphone is charging and other devices with USB 2.0 working just fine. I also tried to rollback driver or to update to newer version but with no avail. Actually the signal was even worse and internet speed very slow.

I dont know if this issue was still on windows 8 tho, i didnt try to connect my HDD to it before the upgrade.

Same issue with 3 different networks, different routers. Disk was connected to PC when nothing else was.

Samsung disk was connected to another HP and ASUS laptop running windows 8.1, USB 3.0 and its running perfectly fine. So its not HDD problem.

My next try is to connect another HDD with USB 2.0 to distinguish if USB 3.0 connection is the culprit...

Is anyone experiencing the same issue as I do? Or is there some magic thing which I overlooked and will solve this problem?

Thanks for help!

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head to me. Plug in USB 3.0 device and WLAN drops signal strength.

Unplug USB 3.0 device and WLAN is fine.

    So update:

Wi-fi is disconnecting randomly i just didnt see that before cause its happening 1-2 times per day (approx usage 12 hrs)

This i can survive, its probably just driver issue.

I tried another HDD Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0, 500GB to confirm that issue will be the same. To my surprise:

1st port improved the signal strength (from 2-3 signal indicators it jumped to full 5)and when i put it in 2nd USB port WLAN gets disconnected.

Doesnt make sense. Some voltage issue but how to test it?
