Microphone not Working/Detected

I have an Aspire M5-481PT-6644 Windows 8 laptop with a combo jack. I also have a Sure SM-57 dynamic microphone with an XLR to 3.5mm (2 pin) adapter cable. First off, when I plug this into the combo jack, it doesn't seem to be detected and doesn't work.

I purchased a combo jack splitter from Extrasensory Devices called the Rockit (link to product here), and it's purpose is exactly what I need. I want to be able to use regular headphones and a mic at the same time on my laptop. Upon receiving this splitter, the mic still didn't work. The mic does work on my old laptop that has a dedicated microphone input port. Also, the mic and headphones used with the splitter all work on my smartphone. However, I can't get it to work on my laptop.

I am running out of options, and I may be thinking of going with some sort of USB option to use my microphone. My concern, though, is that no matter who I ask, everyone says that the splitter I have should work. But it doesn't.\

*Also...*

I have a Turtle Beach x11 headset that has a USB, mic-in, and headphones out connection. When I plug the USB in and the corresponding 3.5mm connections into the splitter, everything works fine. Why can't I get my SM-57 to work?

  • Only one microphone can be active at any one time. By default your M5 mic will be active.
From the control panel, select 'Sound'.
Under the recording tab, switch from the internal M5 mic to the Shure.
