Windows 8 Start screen broken on Aspire V

I bought an Aspire V with Windows 8.1 (at least I think it's 8.1; can't even see how to check version in Win 8) in Canada about 8 weeks ago. Back in Australia, all was good until about a week ago when I found that none of the apps in the Start screen would work. Every one I've tried attempts to access the Internet, then shows "This page can’t be displayed". This includes the Acer Support tile in the Acer Explorer app (which is the final insult!)

Interestingly, I can still use IE when I run it from the Desktop screen, but it too bombs when run from the Start screen.

(I actually thought I could get to like Windows 8, but my frustration with its information concealment is is getting intolerable.)

Do I have to resort to the Acer Restore feature, or is there a way to beat some sense back into Windows 8 ?

    Hi AllenN

Sounds like you need one of these Smiley LOL

Seriously, see here for some advice on how to repair the Windows 8 Start Screen (and associated apps). You may also like to try a System restore to a date when they worked OK. If all else fails (other than using one of the above), do a refresh of Windows (or ultimately a full re-install).

That's rubber mallet. I think a sledgehammer would be more effective. Actually, gravity would be fine (I have a 2nd-storey balcony).  But, really, I doubt it's the Acer laptop at fault, so why punish the hardware.

I've been trying to figure out how to do a system restore, but Windows hides almost everything I used to know. The link you suggested refers to a problem bigger than mine: the Start screen is functional, but none of the Metro apps can connect to the Internet (even though the laptop itself connects just fine, and IE launched from the Desktop also connects okay).

Getting weird, now. The connection problem just resolved itself. I was only researching options for restoring the system (using the Desktop version of IE), when I tried the Metro apps again -- and they all work!

I don't like not knowing what happened or how it resolved, but I guess I can move on.
