TravelMate 3260-4450 running WinXP Pro 32-bit - Ethernet port trouble

I'm having trouble with my "fast ethernet controller" (a Marvell Yukon 88E8038 PCI-E) - it just turns off, especially after waking from Standby. Most of the time, by re-starting or re- booting the computer, controller re-connects with my router (a Verizon FiOS all-in-one, which I've had very little trouble with). When I go to Properties by right-clicking the Yukon in Device Manager, I see the folowing: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)." Troubleshoot is of no value as it says to uninstall and re-install which I've already done - very time consuming!

 

I have been able to get around this by turning on WiFi when necessary but fear that I will eventually lose my connection to the net as many problems have been reported with wireless controllers (mine is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG).

 

I went to the Acer Download site looking for a driver upgrade and found that the version installed (8.61.3.3) is newer than the one offered on the site (8.59.5.3) - note that the publish dates back this up. I went through the docmentation for the older driver just to see how my current setings in the "Advancd" tab of the device's Properties compare. My current settings line up with all the recommendations given. Aside from a couple of settings that are only used for dual link adapters, I noticed that my current driver is missing the Property "Jumbo Frame Support" - ??

Given that the system is now at least 6-7 years old, it's quite possible that you just have a hardware failure.

 

Unfortunately, due to the age of the system, I would not recommend attempting to repair the onboard ethernet.

The cost would not be reasonable for a system that old.

 

The 'recent issues' with wireless are mostly confined to Windows 8 and the Atheros wireless cards.  They do not affect your system or wireless controller.

 

Please continue to use your wireless controller.
