Acer Aspire V5-471P-6662 won't sleep when lid is closed, causes weird problems with keyboard

I have had my Aspire V5 for a little over a month running Windows 8 and it has been great, but recently it started refusing to go to sleep when I close the lid.  The screen will go black but the computer will not enter sleep mode.  The other thing that is weird is that when I close the lid and then open it again, I no longer have proper funtionality of any of the keys that have a num lock function (such as the M,J,K,L,U,I,O,P keys).

All of those keys start doing their own weird things.  For example, the M key won't work at all, the P key will input a *, and the U key will function as the left arrow key.  But if I put the computer to sleep using the power button and then wake it back up I will regain the proper use of those keys.  Also, adjusting the brightness with the function and arrow keys will no longer work after closing and opening the lid unless I restart the computer.  To try to solve this issue I have tried:

  • Checking the power settings in Windows: it is set to sleep both on battery and when plugged in when the lid is closed.
  • Checking for any viruses, malware, or spyware.
  • A system restore to a time when I was not having the issue.
  • A complete reset to factory settings.

I have scheduled to send my computer in for repair under warranty but before I go through the trouble of that I was wondering if anyone had any clue what is going on with my computer.

Thanks in advance!

For the 'blue keys' and issues with the keyboard, it really sounds to me that the Fn key is stuck.

This may be something that they can look at in service or you may be able to determine without service.

For sleep mode issues, please understand that sleep is not instantaneous and saving data does take some time for hibernation mode.

How did you determine that it was not going to sleep after closing the lid?
