After updating RAM, having issues with screen resolution

I own an Acer Aspire 5551. It was getting a little old so I decided to upgrade the RAM (because I also work at a computer store and can get it at a discount). I turned off my computer, took out the battery, took out the old 1 GB and 2 GB ram sticks (one of each), and inserted the two 4 GB ram sticks I purchased.

After I put everything back in correctly, I turned on my computer and the screen resolution/picture was all wonky. The screen resolution says its 1024 x 768, but the original scren resolution is actually 1366 x 768, so it looks streched, and won't let me select any more options.

I replaced the old 1 GB/2 GB RAM into to the computer on the advice of a friend, and when I started it back up the screen resolution was back to its normal 1366 x 768.

Why is it that on 8 GBs of RAM  ( 2 x 4 GB), the screen resolution isn't right?

  • RAM issues can manifest in diverse ways.
The only information I can find regarding RAM for the 5551 is from Crucial. I would check their site and ensure that the specs match.
Also you should confirm that Windows reports your RAM as 8GB.

I would also highly recommend you run a 'real' memory tester. Memtest86+ is the one I would recommend (it has been around for many years and has, as far as I am aware, always been regarded as the De facto memory tester):

    www.memtest.org/

You will need to run this from a memory stick (it will create a bootable stick for you).
