    "Thanks again for everthing.

I don't know bout how to  burn a *modified* Acer restore CD."

-- no problem, and can help with that, but let's leave that solution "in the queue" for now, as it's a "dirty" solution, if you will.

"i do have a license#  fr. the dead HP (affixed to Bottom of unit)  where i got the XP Install disk I am usingto try to restore. Have the Win license also fr.  bottom of Acer notebook. "

-- then you should be able to do a clean install, since you have an OEM install disk.  Only thing is it might not install all the drivers you need for your Acer, or install wrong ones (HP drivers).  This can be fixed.  I can help you look for drivers if it comes to that.  Clean install is last resort though, so cross that bridge when we come to it.

"Acer doesn't  support the XP recovery disk  i should be able to get("No RCD available for the entered Serial Number.") fr. Acer, cuz of non support of XP this April,I guess. Acer left me high and dry after i burned the eRecovery DVD and it didn't recover properly(why?), now they won't send me any method to recover, seems they are obligated to get me some sort of recovery option, even if i wanted/needed to install a new hard drive and reinstall the softload that came with the system. I am screwed eh."

-- I hear you.  It sucks that this is happening. Most companies are moving away from restore media now.  Just think though, even if a company ships restore media... it can go bad, you know.

"Or am i missing something. ACER-TOMMY (above) thot  a hardware error was problem, but system ran fine til I got the boneheaded idea to recover via factory default repair. ACE VINCE53 thot try safe mode but i havn't fig out how to get there."

--  I believe there is a keystroke you can hit at boot time to enter safe mode but not sure what. If the factory/media-less restore fails, this is something we can try, but I wouldn't know what to do, other than maybe a chkdsk, once in safemode.  At that point though, could private message ACE VINCE maybe he can help.

Try the restore procedure outlined in the link, first.

"OK, i just saw your idea on repair console while i wrote this, i will start work on that."

-- let me know what happnes.  Fingers crossed.

"I hoped an "easy" way out would be a clean install, but don't know the rules on what's necessary to do that.I thought a KEY was enuf but MSFT won't allow this on a diff. computer?,even tho HP is dead, where install disk is from."

-- Clean install is less easy when you are installing an OEM version onto a machine by a different OEM.... drivers... fixable.  Key-wise, you should be ok since it is XP.  I think it's after that they got persnicketty about which machine the software works on.  And as you say XP is going end of life.  I suspect if you'd realized your recovery was going tobe XP you wouldn't have uninstalled Vista.  Smiley Frustrated  Sigh...

Hang in there. I need to catch some shuteye now but will be back to check on you.  Smiley Happy

    Hi Streaky,

"i have tried this method in the link you have but this Alt/ F10 doesn't put me into erecovery"

--- ACK!  I'd say next order of business -- least invasive maneuver -- is to run chkdsk /r from the recovery console on the system volume (the drive containing the WINDOWS directory).

Write down the names of any files in which errors are found, as chkdsk progresses.

If any errors are found, they will be fixed, and in that case, you can try to reboot.

If no errors are found, the situation will not have changed.

    --------------------------

    If you want try googling

"Windows XP' booting in "safe mode"
and see if you can find the keypress to produce the option, on boot, to start up in safe mode.  If you can get to safe mode, I'd try sending a private message to Ace VInce maybe he can help.

I'll be back after I sleep. Smiley Wink
