Notes on W510

This is being a real learning experience. Have two questions in now, one from the 22nd but getting mushroom management. Could be that even the Acer techs do not know the answers about the BIOS and maybe they were handed the fireware code by "someone else".

Stopped by the Microsoft Store and looked at several tabs including a couple from Samsung. The ATIV was over a grand and has an I5 CPU, the other was less and had a Clover Trail. The I5 had cooling vents & a fan and the Clover Trail did not which confirms some of my thinking about thermal issues. Make sure a W510 is operated only when the back is clear or it might overtemp.

Talking with a tech who could spell UEFI also makes me pretty sure that

1) Legacy mode is not available so might as well leave "Secure Boot" turned on.

2) There are very few signatures in the store - maybe only Microsoft's.

This means to me that for now that Windows 8 is the only operating system that can be loaded conventionally, either the Acer distro which includes a Media Player app and a few other things, or the Windows 8 Pro. This makes sense since only Win8 has the power management extensions required by Clover Trail to extend battery life and for thermal management.

Interestingly, the Samsung machines were both missing one thing that the W510 has & normally only comes with a developer SDK, DEBUG, which makes me wonder what else is in the factory load. DEBUG was also in the pre-release version of Win8.

This reinforces my feling that the W510 may be a joint Acer/Microsoft/Intel device to test market reaction before the exact Surface 8 Pro configuration is decided. The best price I've seen for the W510 is still from Microsoft.

So far I have been able to make it do everything I could want though some things were not obvious. I do believe this is going to be a game changer and 2013 is going to be "Interesting".
