Using LCD TV as extension to laptop display

HI all, i'm not too clued up on computers and have an issue i'm hoping has a very simple solution.

I have recently bought an Acer Aspire E1-571

Intel Core i5-3230M 2.6GHz with turbo boost up to 3.2GHz

Intel HD Graphics 4000, up to 1760MB Dynamic video memory

15.6" HD LED LCD

4 GB DDR3 Memory

750 GB HDD

I have plugged into my Matsui 22" LCD TV via HDMI connection and selected the TV as an extension so I can use both screens.

However the image on the TV doesn't fit the screen (image is too big) and the image quality is very poor!

I have tried selecting each of the resolutions in the settings on the laptop and they only alter the size of the image, mostly too small. None of them help with the image quality.

The only settings on the TV in HDMI mode by selecting "aspect" on the remote are "FULL" (it is currently set to this) and "4:3".

Could someone please offer some ideas or knowledge on this?

Thank you,

Steve.

The resolution on the E1-571 is 1336 x 768, which is a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you change the TV to 16:9 aspect ratio, do you have the same problem? Also, does the image look ok on the TV, if you just output it to the TV and don't try setting up a dual display?
