DA220HQL screen durability and 2.4 Ghz to have 802.11n WiFi to function when all on market are 1 Ghz

I would like to buy a couple of these computers to use SplashTop software to control and retrieve material from my main computer in another room. I am concerned about the many complaints of touch screen problems and also would like to know if it is an easy to clean surface like glass or other. Will Acer replace your computer if screen fails as appears to happen frequently? I need to move large uncompressed 9 megapixel pictures quickly and was interested in the 802.11n WiFi but am confused by the statement with 2.4 Ghz when all units I see for sale are 1 Ghz. Hope someone can answer

  • I am assuming, in the second part of your question, you are referring to 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz.

Firstly, you should be aware that there is no correlation between bandwidth and frequency.

2.4GHz has a greater coverage than 5GHz (high frequencies 'drop off' more quickly). It can also penetrate obstacles such as walls more readily than 5GHz.
The downside is that there are fewer channels available plus there is potentially more interference from many other devices that use the same frequency. Any such interference can effectively reduce throughput as a result of a necessity to resend corrupt packages.

5GHz, on the other hand, has more channels available and currently has less likelihood of interference. Consequently, it is likely to have a greater throughput 'success rate' with fewer resent packages where there are fewer obstructions.

So, probably not at lot to choose between them. That said, consider your environment. Do you suffer with increased interference (microwave ovens, cordless phones, other WiFi networks etc)? Are your end points 'line of sight' or are there many obstacles (walls etc)?

If interference is an issue, choose 5GHz.
If obstacles or coverage is a consideration, choose 2.4GHz.
