I normally use a friend who is excellent at repairing it, but he was on holiday in the Philippines...and well I hope he is still alive. It is so hard to find someone trustworthy as some of the store repair people have terrible reputations. How do I find someone trustworthy who won't rip me off/lose it and everything on it etc. in the Surrey/Southern Greater London, England UK area?

Albionia, I hope that your friend is all right. Despite the terrible tragedy that struck them, most people on the Philippines have survived.

The best way to find an honest computer repair shop is to ask your friends.

Another method is to look at the prices of new laptops, and when they give you a repair estimate, reject it if would be cheaper to buy a new one.

I'll probably incur the wrath of many people for this, but the longer a shop has been in business, the more likely it is to be honest.

If you'll give us the complete model number of your machine and tell us what's wrong, we can probably give you some good advice.

It is an Aspire5553G, AMD Phenom II Quad Core Processor N930 2Ghz, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470. Upto 2175mb HyperMemory, 15.6" 16.9 HD LCD, 4 GB (3.75 usable) DDR3 Memory, 320 gb HDD, DVD-Super multi dl drive.

Or that's what it says on the sticker on the computer. If you need something else, please tell me, I wasn't entirely sure what you wanted.

I was surfing on the Internet and it suddenly froze. My cursor wouldn't move at all. I rebooted and the cursor moved fine as I logged in (I have the options on making me use a password whenever I enter it), but when it got to the desktop screen again it froze again. When I tried again it got to the black 'loading screen', after that it just beeps when I turn it on and the fan whirls for a couple of secs. My computer guy did replace the CD-ROM drive when my computer broke down a year/two ago and the computer had stopped working (that was apparently the cause, and I trust him).

The problem is also I don't have many friends and so I'd be using the Yellow Pages which do have a cowboy reputation at times.

Albionia, you have some friends here. The introductory screen shows that your power, BIOS chip, monitor cable, and monitor are all working fine.

You probably have a problem with your hard drive. There is 1/3 chance that it is only a software problem. You'll have to borrow a legal copy of your operating system and put it into your DVD drive, and then restart your computer. If you're lucky, it will take you to a repair screen.

If it is a hardware problem, you will need to take it to a shop.

Your machine is valuable enough that it might be a good idea to pay to have it repaired. So how do you find an honest computer shop? Ask the manager of the grocery store that you use. Ask the manager of the bank that you use. You can also go to the store where you bought your machine and ask them who they recommend; they might tell you to ship it back to Acer for repairs.

First thing I did after I bought the laptop, before I did anything else was make the Factory back-up discs, and a set of backups of those too. Boy, I am glad I am that kind of person lol. I will give that a try and let you know. Thank You so much for all your support Vince.

Tried with the System Repair Disc - had to use the pin in the hole to get the drive to eject as the eject button didn't work. First time a screen appeared for a split second then a lot of whirring from the drive and nothing. When I made repeated attempts, nothing on the screen and just a bit of whirring from the drive for a few secs.

As for a trustworthy computer repair guy - one reason I made this post on this community was in the hope someone would recommend such a person in my vicinity.
