    hi...

You may try to perform a power reset and check if the issue is resolved.

    To perform a power reset:

    1. Unplug the AC adapter from your notebook.
    2. Turn the notebook over to remove the battery.
    3. Turn the notebook back over and open it.
    4. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds, then release the power button.
    5. Turn the notebook back over and slide the battery back into place.
    6. Slide the lock tab back into the lock position.
    7. Turn over the notebook one last time and plug in your AC adapter.
    8. Turn on your notebook.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the power reset procedure failed to correct the problem...any further suggestions?

Note to Sharan: four hours ago, we got a nine year old computer that the repair shop coldnt fix to start working again. We used the "universal repair method" which you just described.

Ace, are you seeing any lights when you try to start your computer? If not, you probably have a hardware problem and need to take it to a shop. If you see lights, you MIGHT only have a software problem. Try to borrow a legal copy of your operating system and put it into the optical drive and then rebooot. MAYBE it will take you to a repair menu.

    Thanks for the reply!

Yes...a blue light is seen for about a second when the power button is depressed, along with  a somewhat smaller blue light, just to the left of the touch-pad. You feel that this implies some kind of software issue?

Ace, it depeonds. Does the BIOS screen still manage to come on? Regardless, I would try using a legal copy of your operating system to get to a repair screen. If that doesn't work, you need to take it to a shop.

Negative on the BIOS screen...it's completely dark. You think there's power to the optical drive?

Ace, once the laptop has electricity, it turns on the CPU, which turns on the BIOS chip, which turns on the monitor. Since you can't get that far, it's safe to say you have a hardware problem. I would take it to a reputable repair shop, but I would also check the prices of new laptops first.
