Acer wiped my hard drive for absolutely no reason.

I sent in my laptop to repair a noisy fan and cracked screen.  When I received the laptop back the hard drive was completely erased!

When I spoke to the support person on the phone he basically said that they always do this and that I should have backed up the files.

Isn't this a bit... well... completely ridiculous??!??!

At a minimum, Acer ought to refund my repair cost but I imagine the chances of this happening are slim.

Be warned!

  • No, this was not done for absolutely no reason.

Not only would Acer have addressed your fan and screen issues but would have thoroughly tested all areas of your laptop before returning it to you. To be able to do this with confidence it is necessary to test with the machine in a known state. Clearly the best method to guarantee this is to format and reinstall. So no, it is far from ridiculous. This procedure is not confined to Acer and is common.

While it may be an inconvenience having to reload your data from your backups, surely it is a small price to pay knowing your machine has had a thorough inspection!

Gowgow, I'm sorry that this happened to you, but your warranty requires Acer to fix EVERYTHING on a returned laptop.

As we've seen on various threads, reformatting a laptop is more difficult that reformatting a desktop. Acer removed any spyware, malware, conflicting software, etc., and returned your laptop in factory new condition, with all the proper drivers installed.

I admit that this is inconvenient, but in the long term, it will prevent problems.
