According to this article, I should be able to use my Windows 7 ultimate disc to install Windows Home Prem 64 on this laptop, and as long as the SKU is correct, use the product key on the laptop to activate Windows.

Will this work?

This suggests otherwise, but then [what] is the point of the product key???

    Hi alex-barylski

The product key on your laptop is for the version installed, I.E. Windows 7 Home Premium. This product key cannot be used for a different version. If you want to install Windows 7 Ultimate, you will need an Ultimate product key.

I have myself, used the product key on a PC, to reinstall Windows on many machines, where the owner has lost or not made recovery disks, but as I've said, it HAS to be the SAME version. Some PC manufacturers product keys are unusual in the sense that I tried to install Windows 7 SP1 disk to a laptop that originally came without SP1 installed, and it would not activate Windows at all. So I installed an original Windows 7 disk (pre SP1) and Windows activated OK.

Occasionally, I have had problems where the Product key will NOT activate despite the correct version of Windows being installed, although it is relatively rare.

So really, you have 3 options:

    1. Contact Acer Support for your region, to see if they can supply Recovery disks for your model      or

    2. Buy Windows 7 Ultimate & use the product key that it comes with       or

    3. Download the correct version of Windows 7 here (Contains SP1) and use your product key on your laptop
