W3/W510 and Windows 8.1

Just wondering how many others updated to 8.1 through the store and have not had any problems ?

If no did anyone load either the preview or the RTM ?

I suspect that those who did nothing before the official release are not having a problem (of course those having no problems are probably not here).

BTW Acer now has a guide to updating to Windows 8.1 along with a list of supported devices (W3 and W510 are included). I know some were asking and just spotted it.

I have a W510 and went straight from the factory installed 8 to 8.1 RTM via the Store. No preview version ever used. I installed all Windows Updates first, to get the update to enable 8.1 to appear in the Store.

Then I installed the Acer 3.00 driver package. I also tried the 3.01 package.

All the steps went well and everything works great except the wake from sleep problem that most people / everyone is having. There are similar problems reported in forums of Intel, Microsoft, Samsung, Lenovo, Dell, etc, so it’s a universal problem on Clover Trail systems.

Does anyone with a Clover Trail system really not have any problems with 8.1? I don’t think Clover Trail users should be getting offered 8.1 at all, as this is a serious compatibilty issue.

I “solved” the problem by disabling the Intel graphics device in Device Manager. This makes Windows operate with a basic driver. However graphics are laggy, there is no power management support, and you cannot rotate the screen. For me being able to wake from sleep is more important than the problems casued by disabling the graphics device.

Neither Microsoft or Intel are saying much, so we’re not clear who is at fault, but between them I hope they get their s**t together. There would be a lot of users who aren’t technical and would be telling all their friends to buy iPads instead.

FYI, my graphics driver is currently the .1170 version. I tried installing the older version out of the Windows 8 driver package, but then could no longer log in, and had to use System Restore to back out. I don’t suggest people mess around with the graphics driver, just disable it until/if there is an official update. Or don't install 8.1 at all at this time!

I did the original w/ all updates and then to the store upgrade. Did not accept intel driver update. I have not seen any issues except the rotation is sluggish. My issue is finding a backup software for 8.1 and Acer tablet.

Only thing may have been the sleep issue but I usually turn a computer off when not using. Tried it a few times with the W510 and didnt always enter sleep, just went to the splash screen. Did that a couple of times then started sleeping normally the last few. Do have most "wake on" settings turned off in power management though, have no need for "wake on LAN" in a tablet.

Anyone see the new Microsoft Surface 2 adv't ? Video is nothing unusual but the tag at the end has a lot of potential, just wonder if they will do anything with it. "The one device for everything in your lfe"
