Acer Aspire 5740G brightness combination keys and annoying sound from plug in/out the cable.

Hello Acer team,

I bought Acer Aspire 5740G laptop in June 2010.

I have installed on it Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

My first problem, is about "fn" buttons + left/right arrows doesn't work. fn + up/down buttons works perfect (volume changer). Same works with all other fn key commands such like fn + F8 to mute/unmute etc. The only doesn't work is for brightness. I have all drivers up to date, windows latest update, also my Graphic card is latest version. I also tried to roll-back to a older version of some drivers in hope that my problem will be fixed. Nothing.

Anyway, I found a strange "trick" to change the brightness of the monitor, If I want to increase or reduce the brightness, I have first to press these combinations: fn + F6. This one will "close my monitor, then when the monitor is off if I use the following combination of keys: fn + left/right key and after I made the combination, I press a random key to turn back on my monitor. And ofcourse the monitor turns on with different brightness. (Weird..)

To Control Panel > Power Option I don't find anything about brightness. If I reinstall my OS, I see the bar with brightness. Why at "clean OS" I see that bar, and late I don't find it anymore? see below a screenshot of Power Option.

My second problem is the annoying sound made after plug in/out the AC cable. I have the latest audio drivers. If I use the old versions, my laptop won't make anymore the annoying sound anymore.

The problem is, I don't want to use old drivers to fix this. It's very loud, expecially if I am on headphones. If I temporary mute the sound from the windows, I don't hear any sound from the laptop if I plug in/out the AC cable.

I want to know how can I change the sound of the plug in/out with another one? My mother have another Acer laptop, newer than mine, but at her the sound while plugin in/out the AC cable isn't so loud and annoying like mine.

Thank you for help,

JaJe.

JaJe, you have pulled off a difficult task with  only minor problems. When you changed operating systems, you lost your Acer drivers. Whatever drivers you're using now, you are using them on a machine that is not designed for your new operating system.

And yet you only have a minor problem with your brightness, and you've figured out how to solve it. However, if you type "Download free brightness software" into a search engine, you will find a few free programs that should help you.

Concerning your noise problem, I would stay with the original drivers. The new ones aren't designed for blend of machine and operating system.

The problem is, two years ago I didn't had problem with bightness at my OS (Windows 7). After reinstalling my OS, and after installing drivers, I noticed in a week that brightness option disappeared. I remained without this option for a long long time. Just now I decided to post my problems. Expecially for the noise of AC cable.

I'm telling this because my laptop has the jack broken, If I move a bit the cable it's going crazy with these sounds. It's not anymore on warrancy so I have to wait till I repair the jack inside the motherboard. Also the second reason is that I don't found any fix of my problem to any other forums.

I'm not sure, but my mother laptop uses Windows 7 too, why wouldn't be designet for new OS? because we have different Acer aspires models? (My mother's laptop is Aspire 7750G).

I had the same brightness problem after updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 (but everything was after my previous change from Windows 7 to Windows 8). Curiously enough, the solution suggested by JaJe actually works for me as well.

But anyway, I would appreciate if someone came up with a more "definitive" solution.

    Hi.

I am replying because i am also facing this issue.

The laptop is the same, 5740g.

The original OS is Windows7Home, and everything worked perfectly.

After few weeks Windows7Pro was installed, and again everything worked perfectly.

This week has been performed a fresh installation of an evaluation copy of Windows 8.1, (not an update).

The issue described here and relative workaround (fn+brightUp/Down and after fn+F6) is also happening here.

Maybe this issue should be reported to Microsoft, since is happening to the latest version of the operating system.

Or maybe to AMD, since i installed the latest graphical driver and the issue didn't disappear.

    best regards

    Drago
