Replace HDD with SSD

I want to buy an Acer Aspire S7 ultrabook. They come with either 128gb raid0 or 256gb, and Windows 7.

I need space more than speed so would like to replace this with a 750gb 2-1/2" HDD, but I have a few questions:

1. Validation code for Win 8 is burned on the HDD (?). Can I just use the Restore disk (which I would create)?

2. If the new machine is configured with raid0, can I simple replace this with a standard HDD or will the system be looking for a raid setup?

3. I assume that the physical space requirements for the HDD is identical to that for the SSD.

4. Is there anything that I may have overlooked? (I am very comfortable makes hardware changes on desktops and laptops, but have no experience with raid.)

Any help would be appreciated.

You cud replace the HDD with the SSD. Before you proceed, the Refer this link

You need to use the Acer Recovery discs to install Windows on the SSD.

  • As far as I know, all S7 models have Win8. I am not aware of any variant having Win7 (certainly Acer do not provide any drivers for Win7).

I'm also not sure you can replace the SSD with an HDD - doesn't appear to be enough room. The SSD is actually an M-SATA which is a relatively small card.

That said, there is mention of two HDDs for the S7 but I don't know what form factor they might be nor where they could be obtained. I may be wrong with regards space though as I've not seen the S7 innards first hand.

As far as RAID0 is concerned, this shouldn't be an issue (to employ RAID0, you would require a minimum of two physical drives). In this case, the spec states RAID0 capable I believe. I've yet to find a drive that isn't!
