Acer Software

I used two applications that came pre-installed with an A700 Iconia tablet computer.

1. that life cycle clock

2. the weather clock

Both asked to be updated to the latest version.

in good faith ( I should be learning by now) I trustedAcer, I thought that the updates would add features or improve stability or something. They didn't, both now return a "unfortunately this bit of rubbish has stopped working - report/cancel" - for 'this bit of rubbish' you can substitute either of theses Acer apps.

so I went back to Google Play and uninstalled the updates (there's been a few)

They still don't work.

I've written to Acer for some sort of help but here's what I expect to happen.

Acer has already said that they'll get back to me within 24 hours - this is a lie, they won't contact me for over 96 hours or longer.

The person who replies will tell me that Acer don't support the software they install on Android tablets

or they will need to pass the problem 'up the chain'

this will take another week

then they will say - tough luck, we don't have an answer.

so I've had to resort to this forum,

since these are Acer-installed apps I can't uninstall/reinstall

I've rebooted a few times

- what else can I do to get these to run?

    good!

    step one completed.

Acer support has unequivocally said someone will be in touch WITHIN 24 hours

I don't know anyone who has had satisfactory after-sales service from Acer, in fact it's been so poor that it has been a selling point for other manufacturers a sort-of " it was a bit more expensive but at least it isn't Acer" deal.

I bought my parents an Acer desktop a few years ago, after it had to be returned twice because the Tech Support team didn't know their own product I sold it on eBay and got them a Dell - dunno how good it is but they aren't complaining to me any more.

anybody want to take a bet on when my next contact from Acer about this matter will take place?

The reply from Acer says, in part,

In order to return functionality to these two applications do a hard reset then turn of auto update for the applications.

My question to the forum is ...

If the Play Store reviews/comments/ratings suggest that many people are having an issue with the Acer-branded software then isn't taking the hard reset option cracking a but with a sledge hammer?

I've already gone into settings and done a factory reset and wiped all my private data.

I need to keep this computer 'on the road' during the current exam period and don't have time to waste another 3 hours reinstalling everything.

What else need I do to get these applications working again that doesn't involve wiping everything?

So, after a reset, I sent Acer a screenshot of the 'empty' clock/weather applications sitting on my desktop.

They next advise removing the widgets, replacing them and re-jigging the settings.

If only I could post a screenshot of the result of this re-set/removal/replacement/reconfiguration

It would be a black screen with a "Unfortunately, blah blah blah has stopped working"

The crash means that where I was expecting a working digital clock with a weather report or a weather widget that lets me know what activities might be fun under the prevailing conditions there is now an empty space.

The latest help from Acer hasn't helped.

Fellow forumnites might take note of my prediction that it'll take about a week to have this matter escalated to someone who might know how to fix something rather use a tier one techy who can do little else other than trying to work off a script and making a 'best guess'
