i have a acer 8930g the screen will not come on when the laptop is turned on, i placed a torch on the screen to see if it was the back light to no avail, i tried connecting it to a external monitor through vga and hdmi again to no avail, i've taken the ram out and put it back in and i've also checked to see everything is connected as it should be to no avail, i'm currently stuck and have no idea what it could be other than a failure of graphics on the motherboard, any idea what it could be?

BFC, I'm sorry that you're having this problem. Does the splash screen (which usually has an advertisement) come on? If so, your monitor is working and you have a hard drive problem.

If the splash screen does not come on, but you are getting flashing lights, then PROBABLY you have a loose monitor cable or your monitor has failed.

Despite being four years old, your laptop is a powerful rig that I would consider worth repairing. If your splash screen does come on, try to borrow a legal copy of your operating system, install it in your optical drive, and restart. It will present you with a choice of troubleshooting options, but this will only work if you have a software problem. If your hard drive itself has failed, you'll have to take it to a repair shop for a new one.

Unfortunately I do not receive a splash screen

It also will not allow me to connect a external monitor so I've assumed it would be the graphics card?

BFC, whatever it is, it is a hardware problem.  You'll have to take it to a reputable computer shop and see what they tell you.
