Acer One D270 keyboard problem

My D270 is the 3rd Acer One I have purchased. The first was for myself and the 2nd was a gift for my husband - I was so impressed with the first 2 - I treated myself to my D270. hate to say it - but it has been huge disappointment - lack of RAM being my main issue - although I have still loved it until 6 weeks ago - the keys (7 in total - Q,1,#,I,K,V,P) started to come loose on the keyboard and fall off - some have managed to refit myself - others haven't.

I have returned the unit to Acer for repair it is less than 12 months old to be told - I have damaged it myself! - Has anybody else had the same problem and bad experience?

Welcome aboard, Sparkles. You said that you damaged the keys yourself. What did you do?

To make my point clear - I have not damaged the keyboard! - Over the last 6 weeks - 7 keys have come loose some have come off completely - other I have managed to push back on!

Having reported the fault to Acer and returned the unit it to them - Acer have told me I have damaged it!

I love my Acer - it's a fault - I would like others to comment on their D270 Keyboard problems - or am I just the only one.

    Thanks for your reply

Yes Acer will happily repair "my damage" at my expense!

The issue I am trying to raise is the loose keys on the keyboard unique to my machine or a common D270 problem.

    Hi Sparkles,

This is one of the unfortunate scenarios when the Acer warranty can be a nuissance. The warranty states that Acer will cover any defects at their cost, but because of the nature of your problem it's almost always considered a customer induced damage. Acer has a standard out of warranty fee that they charge per unit regardless of the issue. This means that if your screen is damaged or if your mainboard is fried because you spilled water on it or even both, the standard fee will cover the entire repair. As a matter of fact I know of a person who dropped their laptop into a pool and destroyed every single component. For the standard out of warranty repair fee Acer provided him with a fully functional unit in less than two weeks.

While in these scenarios the cost is well worth it in your situation it's likely not worth the cost. I'd suggest you call them back and ask to escalate the issue. Acer's tech support can be very helpful but they have rules that they must follow. If you escalate your case you're bound to reach someone with a little more authority who may be able to help you. Just explain your situation and how you feel that the damage wasn't your fault and you may be surprised. Keep in mind that the best way to handle the situation is to remain calm and to be polite. I've found that most of the tech's I've spoken to are willing to do what it takes to help, so long as I'm not treating them like it's their fault or ultimately their decision, which it likely is not.

If it doesn't work out you can always order a new keyboard for ~ $20 with shipping online and you can either bring the unit to a repair shop or you can replace it yourself "suprisingly easy to do". There are videos online that show you exactly how to do it.

Best of luck and take care!
