S241HL Monitor does not fill the screen in Windows 7

Hi everyone

I purchased S241HL monitor. The CD that came with it is unusable. Connected to a Windows 7 64-bit machine it does not fill the screen if the monitor is setup as the main display. If a second S241HL (I purchased two) is connected to Windows 7, this one works perfectly.  If in the same machine both displays are connected in Ubuntu Linux, they work perfectly. Which tells me Windows 7 is not recognizing well the monitor setup as main display. Windows 7 acknowledge its optimal resolution (1920 x 1080) but it does not fill the screen. However, in the monitor that is not setup as main display the screen is filled it out completely.

There is a S241HL driver for Windows 8. Could it work under Windows 7? I do not know. I have not tried it yet. I appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance

Manufacturer drivers for monitors are...silly (imho). Whenever you plug in a monitor, some basic driver should be installed by your OS (W7, in this case) that should automatically setup your monitor for optimal settings. Likely, if there's a problem with the display (non natural resolution, limited colors, etc.), it's your graphics processor which has the bad driver. As this doesn't appear to be the case, I might suggest two things to check:

    • Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Display: play around in there while experiencing your problem to try and see if there's a specific option within Windows that can fix the problem.
    • Control Panel > System and Security > System > Device Manager > Monitors > Acer S421HL: from here, double click on the monitor, and go to the 'driver' tab. Either try updating or uninstalling the driver (make sure you have an active internet connection before doing this). This will essentially reset the software, and may hopefully help.

Otherwise, maybe try experimenting some with the trouble-some monitor's settings (bottom right of the panel, there should be a 'menu' button) - though honestly, that shouldn't matter if (as I understand it) it displays fine in linux. I definitely would NOT suggest the W8 driver - that'll likely complicate matters more than solve anything. Otherwise, some pictures might be nice as to ascertain exactly what you mean by 'not fill the screen'.

I have the same problem with a brand new S421HL connected to a PC running Windows 7 and with a Intel G45/G43 Express Chip. The Device Manager for Monitors shows Generic PNP Monitor. So I went ahead and downloaded the Windows 8 drivers. Now it says S241HL. But the display is unchanged.

By "not fill the screen" what I mean is that I get the full windows desktop with a black border around it. .8" top and bottom, 1.2" left and right. So my new 24" monitor is in effect a 21" monitor.
